February 28, 2009

Dear Friend,

We have many exciting updates about NTC initiatives this month -and a new fundraiser in Newton that benefits our readers as well as NTC.

Mahundi Primary School StudentNTC Welcomes Mahundi Primary School

NTC welcomes Mahundi Primary School in Kwala to the NTC family! Twenty 6th grade students at Oak Hill Middle School and Ms. Ceglia’s 3rd grade class at Mason Rice Elementary school completed several cultural exchange projects to share with students at Mahundi. The projects were warmly welcomed by the Mahundi students and staff, who celebrated the initiation of the partnerships during NTC President Ross Lohr’s visit to Kwala earlier this month. Examples of cultural exchange projects and a video about these partnerships will be available on our website later in March.

Girls Scholarship Project Underway NTC’s Girls Scholarship Project has been successfully initiated at Kwala Secondary School.  We are supporting twenty girls (pictured below), identified by the female teachers of Kwala Secondary School as “at significant risk of dropping out of school,” for an entire year of schooling. The girls have received the necessary materials for the 2009 school year, and have written letters to their sponsor families in the United States. Thanks again to everyone who contributed to NTC’s girls scholarship fund!

First Group Exchange Trip to Kwala in July

NTC is bringing its first group of Newton citizens and students to Kwala this summer. We will stay in the homes of teachers from Kwala Secondary School, visit both Kwala Secondary School and Mahundi Primary School, and participate in building nine new latrines at Kwala Secondary School. Currently, the school has only four toilets for 350 students, and none for the staff. Students frequently leave school because they are uncomfortable using the school toilets and sometimes do not return. Students from NTC Club at Newton South have been raising money to fund the project which will provide Kwala with eight more student toilets and one staff toilet.

Our trip is being organized through one of NTC’s partners – United Planet, a Boston-based organization committed to creating cross-cultural partnerships and providing volunteer-based travel opportunities around the world.

Additionally, Jackie Schon (who painted pictures from Kwala for our NTC Event last November) and Joe Liu will be creating a school mural at Kwala Secondary School. Kwala students have been invited to submit proposals in a mural designing contest at the school, and the submission with the most student votes will be created during our visit (on the wall pictured below) by Jackie, Joe, and students from Kwala.
