July 14-28 Trip to Kwala

NTC is looking for a few more motivated people to complete our first group trip to Kwala this summer! We will leave on July 14th and return July 28th. We will be visiting Zanzibar and touring Dar es Salaam before heading to Kwala to spend time in the village where we will visit both Kwala Secondary School and Mahundi Primary School. We will also work on a community service project to build four latrines for Kwala Secondary School. The trip promises to be exciting, enjoyable and world-view changing. Please contact us at rlohr@newtontanzania.org if you would like more information.

Secondary School Latrine Project
Students from NTC Club at Newton South High School raised $2,500 for the latrine project through their support of holiday fundraisers at Barnes & Noble and Peet’s Coffee and Tea. Congratulations on a job well done and many thanks to the students and those companies!

Girls Scholarship Project for 2009

NTC has also raised enough money to support twenty girls for an entire year of schooling (in Form 3, which is similar to junior year in the United States) as part of NTC’s Girls Scholarship Project. The girls, promising students identified by the Kwala school community as at serious risk of dropping out of school for financial reasons, will be provided school fees, uniforms, food, and safe housing near the school. The teachers and staff at Kwala Secondary School and NTC are working with the girls’ families to ensure that they can provide for their daughters to attend Form 4 the following year and graduate. Thanks to everyone who generously donated to the Scholarship Project – and stay tuned to hear about their progress!

New School-to-School Initiatives
NTC is expanding its school-to-school initiatives in 2009 to include partnerships between Mason-Rice Elementary School, Oak Hill Middle School, and Mahundi Primary School, Kwala’s primary school. Students from the three schools will be contacting each other through cultural exchange projects over the next few months.
